You are all computer scientists. You know what FINITE AUTOMATA can do.You know what TURING MACHINES can do.For example, Finite Automata can add but not multiply.Turing Machines can compute any computable function.Turing machines are incredibly more powerful than Finite Automata.Yet the only difference between a FA and a TM is that the TM, unlike the FA, has paper and pencil.Think about it. It tells you something about the power of writing.Without writing, you are reduced to a finite automaton. With writing you have the extraordinary power of a Turing machine

    Language and Restriction

It is interesting that sometimes language is the restriction to our exploration in science.

    a breaking heart

It's kind of hard to imagine how life reaches the end until you are really facing it. It all started in this semester, maybe I shouldn't have been to gym that often (twice a week...??!!). There were ominous signs, like the aching of the left shoulder after exercises, which were totally ignored. It's really pathetic, sometimes, when I feel that I should dedicate myself to computer industry, only to find that I cannot bear the flickering (so does Zoran...we are among one third of the whole polpulation on earch who also share the symptom) and physical pressure. How absurd is the world.

    excerpt from Leviathan

That which may perhaps make such equality incredible, is but a vain conceipt of ones owne wisdome, which almost all men think that they have in a greater degree, than the Vulger; that is, than all men but themselves, and a few others, whom by Fame, or for concurring with themselves, they approve. For such is the nature of men, that howsoever they may acknowledge many others to be more witty, or more eloquent, or more learned; Yet they will hardly believe there be many so wise as themselves: For they see their own wit at hand, and other mens at a distance. But this proveth rather tha men are in that point equall, than unequall. For there is not ordinarily a greater signe of the equall distribution of any thing, than that every man is contended with his share.

    emotionally compromised

Just realized how unhappy I have been for the this year. Should finding a girlfriend be the ultimate solution, I will not heisitate to pursue it.

    TR35

Adrien Treuille ...got familiar with this name during me exchange period in UW. Guess his one of Zoran's favorite students. I was trully amazed when the ESPN car stuff came out in the beginning.

    Summary of the Summer

Another summer just ended, a crazy summer indeed.

Too dangerous to deal with so many things at a time. Lucky that I didn't screw up all the things. The stuff I wrote was sold, but at the price of taking another GRE. Wish the killer application kill not only my GRE score. Life is about trading off different things, just like a process scheduler. However, my scheduling algorithm doesn't always give the optimal solution.

Cloud follows me all through the summer. As the eclipse passed, one cloudburst after another. Shanghai is acceptable in general. But I cannot understand their language. It's so funny that the first taxi driver I met insist that I came from Japan. "Hong Kong people speak better Mandarin." he said. Does a person have to speak good Mandarin with a Shanghainess accent? What's more interesting, I was asked to fill in a form called temporary accommodation record for foreigners. For Christ sake I was in my own country with my Chinese passport. I am Japanese to American and some Chinsese people, and Korean to some other Chinese people. Maybe I should really try to pick up some Japanese and Korean in case I want to commit crime :).

    UP

Some films are meant to be watched with eyes full of tears. Pixar has been the leader of this filed in both technology and more important, story telling since the age of Luxor Jr.

    Elegance

Hit this article http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4caedc7a0100f50e.html?tj=1 while surfing on the web. The author has done some great job there on one of his conference paper concerning picture dehazation. The method is embarrassely simple yet extremely powerful. It just happened that I'm doing a independent study with taicl on mesh editing. The method I was implementing http://mrl.nyu.edu/~sorkine/ProjectPages/Editing/ shares some common traits with this one - simple and powerful :). It seems that behind both methods, there are some fundamental properties of the problems that were somehow neglected by the predecessors. Does that shed some light on our problem?

    Misc in UW

    I. Domingos

    1. If a machine learner is sleeping in the sofa and you kick him up. The first swearing from his mouth is always 'overfitting'. If you kick him the second time, it will probably be 'curse of dimension'.

    2. Overfitting and curse of dimenson will not be solved eventually, so we machine learners will never lose our jobs. Unlike those guys from database, always holding workshops crying for problems to solve...

    3. Learning does not always work. You should have heard about the story of turkey. He was fed every morning around 9 o'clock, so he concluded that he would be fed the same time tomorrow. And then in the morning of thanksgiving day,  he was killed...

    4. Thank god...the speed Intel makes computers faster is faster than the speed Microsoft makes them slower.

    5. It is like what Feynman said, if you think you understand quantum mechanics, then you don't.

    6. This is really a philosophy problem. You might be with in Einstein, who believed that there is a law behind everything in the universe, or Bohr, who said that, okay, the fundamental theory is quntamn mechanics, then the essence of everything is random.

    7. You may not believe in me, so let's see what other people said about it. There is a small company called Microsoft...and you know, some guy called  Bill Gates, who used to be the richest man in the world...

    8. We are being cruel by giving you guys assignments one right after another. And you know, after we've done all of them, there is a final, which will be the global maximum of cruel...

II. Kathleen (CSE557 TA) and Alice (a student taking CSE557) are roommates. One day they suggested that we held a graphics party in their dorm. 'Everyone, bring your coffee and your programs', they told us.

III. Two weeks ago when we first use the UCSC genome browser for multiple alignment, there are only 28 species. After checking out today, it turn out that they have 44 species now... "That's what you will usually find out in this area (computational biology), "Martin said, "everything changes constantly". And now the consequence of this rapid changing is...we have 250GB data to deal with.

IV. One day a group of high school students came to UW for an orchestra event. I talked to one of the girls. She asked me whether I like any girl in the U.S. after knowing that I am from China. 'I like you.' I said. Hearing that, she asked my phone number but I didn't even have one. So on my leaving, she said 'I love you...you are dull !'. All of a sudden, it occured to me that I just met the one I should cherish, someone who loves me and knows me well.

    V. In a graphics class when we were talking about visible surface and BSP-tree.

    Zoran: anyone know John Carmark?

    me: oh, yeah, Quake III.

Zoran: seems 2 of you know him. John Carmark wrote Quake using BSP-tree. Several years ago I gave a lecture in Berkeley on hidden surface removal. I was talking about all the transformations, when John raised a question -- 'excuse me, but what is a matrix?'. He didn't know all the academic stuffs, yet reinvented all the idea of BSP-tree himself.
